After a solid 2021, we are delighted to announce two new members to the H&C team. Please welcome Ian & Callum, who have joined our sales team.

Callum joins us from ALUK where he worked as a project engineer, so he will provide plenty of experience to our team. Ian joins us from SIC Ltd, where he worked as a technical sales engineer.

Ian has over 10 years of experience in the industry, which will be vital to our team.

Donation for Blood Bikes Wales

Dedicated bikers and supporters who provide a vital out-of-hours NHS service couriering blood and other fluids between hospitals in Wales have been ‘busier than ever’ during COVID19. Before Coronavirus, Blood Bikes Wales’ volunteer riders operated solely outside of working hours in the ‘Mid’ area – which covers Cwm Taf Morgannwg – carrying patient samples from the pathology lab at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, to microbiology in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Talbot Green. Since the start of lockdown, however, one rider has been on duty every day, with the charity covering 7am to 7pm on weekdays as well as weekends and bank holidays.

Heat Combustion & Supplies Sales Engineer, Glyn Moore, decided to help us as best they could. He suggested that they should provide some PPE for the bikes and riders and the company agreed.

Glyn got in touch saying “We are pleased we are in a position to help where we can. I can offer you 70% alcohol hand sanitiser bottles, disposable face masks, head shields and anti-bacterial hand wipes. All will be free of charge.” The offer was accepted straight away and one of our riders travelled to the company to accept the goods.

The PPE has been used every day by the riders in the “Mid Section” of Blood Bikes Wales when entering and leaving hospitals as well as when handing the bikes over when changing shift. Alan Harper, Mid Area Manager, said “without the PPE our riders would have been in more of a risk of catching any “bugs” in their duties and no doubt, gave each of them more confidence to continue the work the charity does every day of the year.”

Blood Bikes Wales was formed in 2011 and now has 23 bikes on the road in Wales, with volunteers including controllers, fundraisers and administrators as well as riders. Every member is voluntary, with no paid roles, and the charity is funded entirely by donations.

In the Mid area there are 68 volunteers and two bikes, which are securely stored near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Alan said: “On weekends, the riders complete an eight-hour shift, starting with collecting the bike and checking it over. Then will phone the controller to say the bike is ok for the shift. In Cwm Taf Morgannwg, we answer to urgent calls, which come through to the controller on a dedicated 0300 number. From the moment we respond, we will be there within an hour. We could be transporting anything from blood samples to other fluids, such as human milk, which comes either from Chester, Bristol or Birmingham Children’s Hospital in relays to Monmouth. We also do set runs at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm between Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Glamorgan.”

COVID19 has, of course, had a huge impact on Blood Bikes Wales, with vital fundraising activities such as store collections being put on hold, as well as some volunteer riders shielding. As you would expect in an organisation where every rider has an advanced riding certificate, safety has remained at the fore, both on and off the road. The donation of PPE from Heat Combustion Supplies was very gratefully received.

Lee and Tom are Fundraising for Southampton Hospital Charity

Lee has been a member of the Heat & Combustion team for over 5 years. Please support Lee and Tom who are completing an Ironman Triathlon in Sweden to raise money for Southampton Hospital Charity. Read their story below to find out why. Visit their Just Giving page to donate.

Their Story

In 2019, out of the blue, my younger brother suffered a Brain Haemorrhage. He was taken to the Neurology Department at Southampton Hospital where he had to undergo life saving surgery.

Thanks to the amazing staff and the care provided, he was able to make a full recovery.

As a thank you, myself and Tom have decided to challenge ourselves and signed up to complete an Ironman distance triathlon in Kalmar, Sweden in 2020. Due to Covid the event was cancelled and our entry was moved to August 2021.

An Ironman consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle with a 42km run to finish. The cut off time to complete all 3 elements is 17 hours. We will be training between 12-20 hours per week.

All money raised will go directly to the Neurology Department at Southampton Hospital to help them continue the amazing work that they do every day.

If we aren't able to travel or if the event is cancelled due to restrictions then we are still going to complete the Ironman distance but it will be off our own backs in the UK

Heat & Combustion Donates PPE to Help Charity’s Fight Against Covid-19

We are proud to have been able to donate much-needed personal protective equipment and hand sanitiser to the Wales Air Ambulance.

Heat and Combustion Supplies donated stocks of 70 per cent alcohol-based hand sanitisers, face shields, antibacterial wipes and 3 ply disposable masks to the helicopter charity. We are based next to Wales Air Ambulance operation at Cardiff Heliport.

There is a personal reason why the Charity was chosen to benefit from the donation. Sales engineer Glyn Moore is also a keen motorbike rider and has required the services of the Wales Air Ambulance.

Glyn was delighted that the company could provide the equipment to such a worthy cause. He said: “Heat and Combustion Supplies is in the fortunate position to have ample non-NHS Covid-19 related PPE. As a business, our branch manager, David Hind, asked the team for any valued charities we could help in these very testing times.

For me, having been in the position of requiring the air ambulance and with the Charity’s operation in Cardiff being based so closed to our business premises, it was an obvious choice.

“We hope that it will all be made good use of and provide an invaluable resource to the whole team when providing the valuable service required of them.”

We pride ourselves on being a company that is not too big to care. This donation includes over 500 masks, 100 hand sanitisers, 50 head shields and 50 packs of anti-bacterial wipes to the more than worthy cause.

Speaking about the importance of the helicopter charity, grateful Glyn added: "It is imperative that the service the air ambulance provides is maintained, if not expanded. It may be just a job for the medics and Charity staff but to the people who receive the service, it can make all the difference, which can affect not just the individual but an entire family unit and friends.”

Andrew Lawton, the Charity’s Head of Health and Safety, said: “Thank you so much to the staff at Heat and Combustion Supplies who have donated these essential items to our service.

“The safety of our staff, medics, patients and supporters is paramount and the equipment will provide peace of mind, as well as keeping everyone safe during these difficult times. The donation is extremely generous and we are very grateful.”
